TBT — TEST BEFORE TRADE
Paper Trading Practice
Effective and last updated: 28 October 2026
Practise a process without placing a real order
TBT paper trading is a private, account-based simulation for NSE stocks and supported option premiums. It uses market information to model virtual positions, but it does not transmit orders to a broker or move real funds. The purpose is to test whether a written decision process can be followed consistently after historical research.
What paper trading can reveal
A simulation can show whether signals arrive when expected, whether the selected quantity fits the intended risk limit and whether the workflow is practical during market hours. It is also a place to record mistakes such as acting on an unfinished candle, changing rules after a loss or taking a setup that did not meet every condition.
Paper trading is most useful when the rules remain unchanged for a meaningful observation period. Keep a dated record of the signal, the information available at that time, the intended entry and exit, and any reason for not following the plan.
What simulation cannot reproduce
Virtual execution does not fully reproduce bid-ask spread, queue position, slippage, market impact, partial fills, rejected orders, connectivity failures or the emotional effect of risking money. A displayed market price is not a promise that a live order could have filled there or in the desired quantity. Option premiums may change rapidly and can be especially sensitive to liquidity, volatility and time decay.
A sensible progression
- Write measurable entry, exit and risk rules.
- Backtest the unchanged rules over varied historical conditions.
- Reserve data for out-of-sample validation.
- Paper trade long enough to observe operational errors and different regimes.
- Reassess assumptions, costs and maximum tolerable loss independently.
The Backtesting Learning Guide explains each stage and the most common sources of misleading results.
No performance guarantee
Paper profit is hypothetical and does not predict live performance. TBT does not recommend that a user proceed to real trading, and no simulator can determine personal suitability. Read the Backtesting and Risk Disclaimer before using the workspace.
