TBT — TEST BEFORE TRADE
About Test Before Trade
Effective and last updated: 28 October 2026
Our purpose
Test Before Trade (TBT) is an independently operated financial-technology project built around a simple principle: a trading idea should be written as clear rules and examined against evidence before anyone considers risking capital. TBT provides educational tools for historical backtesting, rule-based stock scanning, simulated paper trading and market observation. It does not provide investment advice, stock tips, managed accounts or guaranteed trading outcomes.
What the website helps you do
The backtester lets a user select an NSE stock or index, choose a historical period and timeframe, define entry and exit logic, and review aggregate hypothetical results. The scanner evaluates completed market candles against explicit conditions. Paper trading lets registered users practise a decision process without placing a real order. These tools are intended to make assumptions visible, repeatable and easier to question.
TBT separates research from execution. A favourable backtest is only the start of an investigation. Users should examine drawdown, trade count, market regime, transaction costs, data quality, parameter sensitivity and out-of-sample behaviour before forming any conclusion. Live results can differ materially from historical calculations.
How TBT approaches quality
- Rules before stories: conditions should be measurable and unambiguous enough for the same data to produce the same answer.
- Completed candles: scanner conditions use completed bars so an unfinished candle does not masquerade as a confirmed signal.
- Limitations in context: the interface and policy pages explain hypothetical performance, data gaps, execution assumptions and survivorship bias.
- No return promises: examples illustrate the interface; they are not actual performance claims, recommendations or forecasts.
- Privacy by design: broker authentication occurs through Alice Blue, and sensitive broker credentials should never be entered into TBT forms or email.
Data and broker connection
TBT currently uses Alice Blue interfaces for broker authentication, instrument references and historical or live market information used by supported tools. Users authenticate on Alice Blue's hosted service. References to Alice Blue, NSE or any other provider describe data or connectivity and do not imply sponsorship, partnership or endorsement. Availability, coverage, corrections and rate limits remain subject to upstream providers.
For a detailed explanation of candle coverage, corporate actions, missing bars, timestamps and instrument-universe bias, read the Data Source and Limitations page.
Who TBT is for
TBT is designed for adults who want to learn how systematic trading ideas can be translated into testable conditions. It can help a learner compare assumptions and understand risk, but it cannot decide whether any security or strategy is suitable for a particular person. Users remain responsible for independent verification and for seeking appropriately qualified professional advice when needed.
Editorial and correction standard
Educational explanations are written for TBT and reviewed against the behaviour of the website. When a feature, data source or important limitation changes, the relevant public explanation should be updated. If you find a factual error, unclear statement, accessibility problem or data-quality issue, please send the page, the statement concerned and supporting detail through the Contact and Grievance page. Corrections are evaluated on evidence, not on whether they make a strategy appear more profitable.
A clear boundary
Nothing on TBT is a solicitation or recommendation to buy, sell or hold a security. Historical and simulated results are hypothetical, may omit real-world costs and can be affected by overfitting or data bias. Read the Backtesting and Risk Disclaimer before using any result.
